Electric Chassis Dynamometer Overheating Alarm Or Motor Failure? Cooling System Efficiency, Insulation Testing, And Preventive Maintenance Strategies
Jul 16, 2025
The overheating alarm or motor failure of the power chassis dynamometer may be caused by various reasons, among which the decrease in efficiency and insulation performance of the cooling system is a common problem. The following solutions are provided from three aspects: optimization of heat dissipation system efficiency, insulation testing, and preventive maintenance strategies:
1, Optimization of heat dissipation system efficiency
① Inspection and maintenance of the cooling system
Fan and radiator: Check whether the cooling fan is running normally (speed, noise), clean the dust and debris on the surface of the radiator, and ensure smooth air circulation.
Coolant circulation: Check the coolant level and pipeline for leaks, regularly replace aging coolant to avoid a decrease in heat dissipation efficiency due to corrosion.
Temperature sensor calibration: Confirm whether the sensor for overheating alarm is accurate to avoid false alarms or missed alarms.
② Environmental optimization
Ensure that the working environment of the dynamometer is well ventilated and avoid areas with high temperatures, humidity, or dense dust.
For high load testing, an external forced air cooling or water cooling system can be added.
③Load management
Avoid prolonged full load operation, allocate testing tasks reasonably, and set overload protection thresholds.
Increase intermittent shutdown cooling time in continuous testing.
2, Insulation testing and troubleshooting
① Insulation performance testing
Regular testing: Use an insulation resistance meter (megohmmeter) to measure the insulation resistance of the motor winding to ground and between phases. The standard value is usually ≥ 0.5M Ω (adjusted according to specific standards).
Humidity monitoring: High humidity environments can easily cause insulation degradation, and dehumidification equipment should be installed if necessary.
Partial discharge detection: Conduct partial discharge testing on high-voltage motors to detect insulation aging hazards in advance.
② Fault diagnosis
Overheating may be related to insulation degradation (such as inter turn short circuits), and infrared thermography should be used to locate hotspots.
Check if the motor wiring terminals are loose or oxidized to avoid contact resistance heating.
③Protective measures
Add protective sleeves to motors and cables to prevent mechanical damage or chemical corrosion.
Upgrade key components with high-temperature resistant insulation materials.
3, Preventive maintenance strategy
① Regular maintenance plan
Daily inspection: Check the cooling system, fasteners, and appearance for abnormalities.
Monthly inspection: Clean the radiator, test the insulation resistance, and lubricate the bearings.
Annual inspection: Thoroughly disassemble and inspect the motor windings and bearings for wear, and replace aging components.
② Status monitoring system
Install temperature, vibration, and current sensors to monitor real-time operating status and set warning thresholds.
Use data analysis to predict component life (such as evaluating the remaining life of bearings).
③ Operating standards
Train operators to avoid misoperation (such as overload start and emergency stop).
Develop standardized testing procedures to reduce abnormal operating conditions.
④Spare parts management
Reserve vulnerable parts (such as fans, seals, fuses) to shorten the time for fault repair.
4, Emergency response suggestions
Overheating alarm: Immediately shut down and check the cooling system, restart after the temperature drops to a safe range.
Motor malfunction: If the insulation fails, it is necessary to thoroughly dry or replace the winding; Bearing damage needs to be replaced in a timely manner to avoid associated damage.
By systematically optimizing heat dissipation, strengthening insulation management, and preventive maintenance, the failure rate of power chassis dynamometers can be significantly reduced, and equipment life can be extended. Suggest developing a specific plan based on the equipment manufacturer's maintenance manual and recording historical data for continuous improvement strategies.
